My Beauty Uniform

I’m a huge fan on the blog Cup of Joe. They do a series called ‘My Beauty Uniform’ that interviews various women about their beauty routines and experiences. I always find the  answers so interesting, so I thought I’d steal the questions and interview myself! They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, don’t they? :p So, here are my answers along with a few pictures:

Do you remember when you first became interested in beauty?
I remember asking my mom if I could shave my legs the summer before sixth grade. I don’t know if that necessarily constitutes beauty, but it’s the first time I can recall really caring about my outward appearance. I also remember that getting my ears pierced was a huge deal! I felt glamorous and mature.Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetWhere did you grow up and how did it inform your view of beauty?
I grew up in sunny southern California, land of the perpetually tan, skinny people. The influence of hollywood here is immense and people really care about their physical health/appearance. Luckily I was sheltered from much of that negativity growing up and was taught a more holistic approach to beauty. But comparison is still something I struggle with constantly, especially during bikini season!

Do you wear makeup?
I don’t wear makeup everyday, but I do enjoy wearing it every once in a while. If I have a big interview or presentation coming up, or just need an extra boost of confidence for whatever reason, I will do my makeup. I subscribe to the theory “look good, do good.”
What about lipstick?
I really like wearing lipstick. It instantly adds emphasis to any outfit and makes photos pop! Matte colors are my favorite.
What about when you’re dressed up?
I can go all out when I’m dressing up. I curl my eye lashes, paint my nails, style my hair and fill in my eye brows. I’m also liberal with the blush– rosy cheeks are just the cutest but we don’t get them naturally out here in SoCal!

My mom is a native Southern Californian. She plays beach volleyball twice a week and stays naturally tanned and toned the whole year round. Many people say we look alike but honestly, neither of us can really see it. We are not the same size or coloring, so we don’t share clothes or makeup often. She inspires me none the less with her effortless style and laid back attitude. She was never too dramatic about my hair or outfits growing up and always let me experiment. Looking back at photos now, sometimes I wish she had told me not to wear certain hideous pieces!
What’s your daily facial skincare routine?
I started seeing a dermatologist a few years ago to clean up some acne, and I’ve been on medication ever since. I use a prescribed face wash in the shower and then cream and moisturizer after. It is so soothing and leaves my skin feeling fresh.

What is your desert island item that you cannot live without?
Chapstick! I fear I am addicted. I try to drink more water throughout the day to combat lip dryness, but sometimes a little BurtsBees can’t be beat.

What do you love most about your look?
I love my lips. I think they are perfectly shaped and have a natural pinkness that no lipstick can recreate. They are the epitome of femininity!

How do you typically style your hair?
I’ve had lots of looks throughout the years- front bangs, side bangs, long, short, you name it. I currently have a short bobish cut. Its so easy- I just roll out of bed and go!
unnamed-6.jpgWhat about hair color?
I’ve also had a myriad of hair colors throughout my life. I like to switch it up every so often to keep things interesting. My hair is currently dark brown, which helps make my blue eyes pop!
IMG_3436What’s your nighttime routine?
I’ve never been great at establishing a routine at night. It’s tough as a student to keep a steady schedule. But I do enjoy lighting a candle, putting on some calming music (usually ukelele) and laying on my bed in my comfy pajamas.
IMG_3336.JPGDo you ever splurge on any treatments?
I get facials and messages every six months or so! They really make a difference and help me fully relax. And I like to get a manicure with my mom at the end of every school year to celebrate.
What’s the most drastic thing you’ve ever done to your appearance?
I pierced my nose a while back, and then I got a tattoo. They say tattoos are addictive, and I agree! I’m already itching for a second one.
IMG_2847.JPGWhen do you feel most beautiful?
I feel most beautiful when I’m engaged in a great conversation. When I feel intellectually and socially confident, it makes me feel more physically confident as well. I also feel beautiful on a date (but that doesn’t happen as often!).

Thanks so much for reading, I hope you found as interesting as I found it cathartic! How would you have answered these questions for your own life?
